Low stakes online poker is completely different than medium or high stakes games. Basically the main difference is the kind of people sitting at the tables. In higher levels you can expect playing against professionals or very skilled players which you are not going to find on low stakes. Also, you can expect a lot of fish in there, making low stakes a profitable place to make easy money.
For example low stakes tournaments may not be worth of your times, but in some sites there are tournaments for $2 which may reach up to $10.000 in the prize pool. Sometimes you can even get into the money by folding all hands and letting other players to finish before you. Actually I have won money in some of them while being away.
When you are playing a medium or high stakes tournament you must follow the M rules and play according to the blinds, but in low stakes tournaments there is a very big exception, when the tournament just started. Some players are very anxious to double up their chips and go all in with barely anything like AQ or small pairs like 77. If you are playing a low stakes tournament and you get a decent hand like QQ do not be afraid in calling somebody going all in or even in going all in yourself, you will be amazed with the kind of calls you can get.
Other usual strategy is to be extra aggressive when all players are in the money but another step is about to hit. For example if you are playing a 1000 players tournament where 300 of them get money and only 102 remaining and the first 100 get more money than the 101 or 102 you can start playing more aggressively against players with less chips than you because they will be afraid to put all the chips in the table as they prefer to wait for 2 more players to be eliminated and then getting more money.
This works also in the opposite way, when a new paying step has been hit players with low stacks start playing more aggressively to double up their chips and get enough of them for the next paying step. Make profit of this and be prepared to call low stackers with just decent cards like JJ or even TT or AK.
The last strategy to use is to use the player’s fear to the last table. In low stakes poker it is common for players to get very, very tight in the final table because every player out means more money and they don’t want to be next. This makes very easy to steal blinds to them and blinds in the final table are high enough to run the risk. Even if they call you with a good hand nothing grants them to win it and in the meanwhile you have pocketed a good amount of them.
As a conclusion, players in low stakes online tournaments are not playing according to the pot odds or M force, they play just according to their stack.
